The
history of the fellowship of God’s people who now meet as
DAVENPORT ROAD EVANGELICAL CHURCH is interesting. The Christian
fellowship known as The Railway Mission were looking
to move from their dilapidated ‘tin tent’ which was on railway land
in Bateman Street, Derby. The Railway Mission had been established
nationally to meet the social, welfare and spiritual needs of
railway employees. Its Derby Branch was formed in the early 1900’s
to reach those employed in the then London, Midland and Scottish
Railway company. |

| With the
aid of loans from its members, and a mortgage from the
Nationwide Building Society, the local, Derby, Committee
of The Railway Mission purchased in 1972 the extensive
Davenport Road premises and renamed them as Davenport Road Evangelical
Church. This area, situated
between the Rolls Royce (Nightingale Road) Works, the
residual railway workshops and residential
homes, is in the older part of Derby. The fellowship
continues to maintain its link
with the national and international work of the Railway
Mission. |

| In May
2005, the Davenport Road Church fellowship
wholeheartedly welcomed the arrival of Andrew Knox as
Pastor, with his wife Fiona and their three children for
which the whole fellowship gives God the glory. It is the sincere prayer of the
Church members and friends that God’s plans and purposes
for the ongoing work in the area and locality will be
fulfilled, and that His Kingdom will be extended in the
hearts and lives of many folk. |
